D- Promethazine Syrup : Each 5 ml Syrup contains Promethazine Hydrochloride BP 5 mg.

It has prolonged antihistaminic actions by its antagonising effects on H1-receptors. Promethazine Hydrochloride (D- Promethazine Syrup) does not antagonise gastric secretion which is mediated by H2-receptors.

i) As an antihistamine
ii) As an Anticholinergic, antiemetic and antipruritic.
iii) Allergic manifestations caused by insect bites, some drugs like antibiotics, sulphonamides, some diseases like measles, small pox.
iv) Urticaria, angioneurotic oedema and vasomotor rhinorrhoea.
v) Cough & common cold
vi) Motion sickness

Oral- 25 mg at night increased upto 25 mg two times daily if needed or 10-20 mg 2-3 times daily. Child- below 2 years- not recommended, 2-5 years 5-15 mg, 5-10 years 10-25 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses.

Drowsiness, dizziness, diarrhoea, disorientation and photosensitivity may occur rarely.

Use in pregnancy and lactation has shown no hazards. Nevertheless, as a precaution it should not be used in pregnancy and lactation unless the physician considers it essential.

Patients receiving Promethazine Hydrochloride for the first time should not be in control of vehicles or machineries. Overdoses of this drug may be recognised by convulsion, ataxia, nightmares and hallucinations. Intake of alcohol should be avoided during treatment with Promethazine Hydrochloride. Promethazine Hydrochloride should be used cautiously in hepatic diseases.

Patients hypersensitive to Promethazine.
