| DESCRIPTION |
D- Metronidazole is an antimicrobial drugs with high activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa; indications include trichomonal vaginitis, bacterial vaginitis, and Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia infections. It is also used for surgical and gynaecological sepsis in which its activity against colonic anaerobes, especially Bacteroids fragilis, is important. Metronidazole is also effective in the treatment of antibiotic associated colitis (pseudomembranous colitis). D- Metronidazole is readily absorbed following administration by mouth and bioavailability approaches 100%. D- Metronidazole is widely distributed in the body. It appears in most body tissues and fluids.

| CONTRAINDICATION |
Known hypersensitivity to metronidazole.

| PRECAUTION |
|
Disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol, hepatic impairment and hepatic encephalopathy; clinical and laboratory monitoring advised if treatment exceeds 10 days.
|
| PREGNANCY AND LACTATION |
There is inadequate evidence of the safety of metronidazole in pregnancy. D- Metronidazole should not, therefore, be given during pregnancy or during lactation unless the physician considers it essential; in these circumstances the short, high-dosage regimens are not recommended.

| SIDE EFFECTS |
|
Nausea, vomiting, unpleasant taste, furred tongue, and gastrointestinal disturbances; rashes, urticaria and angioedema; rarely drowsiness, headache, dizziness, ataxia, darkening of urine, and anaphylaxis; on prolonged or intensive therapy peripheral neuropathy, transient epileptiform seizures, and leucopenia.

| PHARMACEUTICAL PRECAUTION |
Store in a cool and dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.

D- Metronidazole Suspension : Bottle containing 60 ml suspension. Each 5 ml contains metronidazole BP 333 mg.
