 DESCRIPTION

Caldical is a preparation of calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate is a salt, which after taking provides calcium in the body. Calcium requirement varies with age. If calcium intake is inadequate, bone mineralization may be impaired in children and bone loss accelerated in adults.

 INDICATIONS

Raised calcium requirement, e.g. during pregnancy and lactation, and in children and adolescents at times of rapid growth. Inadequate intake of calcium in the diet due to malnutrition. Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Disorders of osteogenesis and tooth formation (in addition to specific treatment), latent tetany and as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure.

 DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Caldical tablet: One tablet daily or as directed by the physician. Higher doses should not be used unless recommended by the physician. Tablet must be swallowed.

 CONTRAINDICATIONS

Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation. Hypercalcaemia (e.g. hyper-parathyroidism, vitamin D overdosage, decalcifying turmours such as plasmocytoma, severe renal failure, bone metastases), severe hypercalciuria (e.g. some forms of malignant disease) and renal calculi.

 PRECAUTIONS

In mild hyper-calciuria (exceeding 300 mg (7.5 mmol)/24 hours) or renal failure, or where there is evidence of stone formation in the urinary tract, adequate checks must be kept on urinary calcium excretion; if necessary the dosage should be reduced or calcium therapy discontinued. High vitamin D intake should be avoided during calcium therapy, unless especially indicated.

Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary calcium excretion so the risk of hypercalcaemia should be considered.

Oral calcium administration may reduce the absorption of oral tetracycline or fluoride preparations. An interval of 3 hours should be observed if the two are to be given.

 DRUG INTERACTIONS

It increases the risk of hypercalcaemia with thiazides. It also reduces the absorption of tetracyclines and bisphosphonates.

 PHARMACEUTICAL PRECAUTION

Store in cool, dry place & protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
