Dolcef250 mg capsule: Pink/white capsules, imprinted with DOLCEFand 250; each capsule contains Cephradine USP 250 mg.
Dolcef500 mg capsule: Pink/white capsules, imprinted with DOLCEFand 500; each capsule contains Cephradine USP 500 mg.
Dolcefsuspension: Yellow coloured, orange/banana flavoured suspension; when reconstituted each 5 ml contains Cephradine USP 125 mg.
DolcefPlus suspension: Yellow coloured, orange/banana flavoured suspension; when reconstituted each 5 ml contains Cephradine USP 250 mg.
Dolcefpaediatric drops: Yellow coloured, orange/ banana flavoured suspension; when reconstituted each 1.25 ml contains Cephradine 125 mg. A dropper to measure the 1.25 ml dose is provided.
Dolcef500 mg injection: Each vial contains 500 mg Cephradine USP as powder of Cephradine and L-arginine.
Dolcef1 gm injection: Each vial contains 1 gm Cephradine USP as powder of Cephradine and L-arginine.

| Uses |
Dolcef , a broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic, exhibits activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is also highly active against most strains of penicillinase producing staphylococci. Dolcefis indicated in the treatment of the following infections:
Respiratory tract infections: Pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis media, tonsilitis, laryngo-tracheobronchitis, acute and chronic bronchitis, lobar and bronchopneumonia.
Urinary tract infection: Cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, epididymitis.
Skin and soft tissue infections: Abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo.
Gastro-intestinal tract infections: Bacillary dysentery, enteritis, peritonitis.
Dolcefis also used in the prophylaxis of infections during surgical procedures.

| Dosage and administration |
Oral dosage: Dolcef may be given without regard to meal.
Adults: Respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue infections: 250 mg or 500 mg four times daily or 500 mg or 1 g twice daily. Urinary tract infections: 500 mg four times or 1 g twice daily. In case of prostatitis or epididymitis prolonged intensive therapy is needed. Gastro intestinal tract infections: 500 mg three or four times daily.
Children: 25 to 50 mg/kg/day, in two or four equally divided doses. Otitis media: 75 to 100 mg/kg/day in two or four divided doses. In severe and chronic infections, larger doses may be required, upto a maximum of 4 g daily in divided doses.

| Intramascular or intravenous |
500 mg or 1 g every 6 hrs, upto 8 g daily in severe infection.

| Perioperative prophylaxis |
|
In surgery: i.m. or i.v. 1 g one half to one and one half hrs prior to the start of surgery; and 1 g every 6 hrs for upto twenty four hrs.

| In Caesarean sections: |
|
1 g i.v. as soon as the umbilical cord is clamped and 1 g i.m. or i.v. 6 and 12 hrs after the first dose.

| Children |
|
1 year of age above/over; i.m. or i.v. 12.5 to 25 mg/kg body weight every 6 hrs. Up to 300 mg/kg body weight daily have been used in severely ill infants and children without apparent adverse effect. Premature infants and infants up to 1 year of age: dosage has not been established.

| Contra-indications, warnings etc. |
|
Contra-indications: Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Precaution: Known hypersensitivity to penicillin.
Use in pregnancy: Animal studies have not shown any teratogenicity during pregnancy. So, Dolcefcan be given during pregnancy when antibiotic therapy is indicated. It is excreted in breast milk and should be used with caution in lactating mothers.
Side effects: Rarely, cephradine may induce a hypersensitivity reaction and gastro-intestinal disturbance which include, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, glossitis, heart burn, dizziness, tightness in the chest, vaginitis, candidal overgrowth, urticaria, skin rashes, joint pains, oedema, mild transient eosinophilia, leucopenia and neutropenia, positive direct Coombs test and pseudomembranous colitis have been reported.
