| Description |
Decotrim Suspension is a preparation of co-trimoxazole, a chemotherapeutic agent effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
|
| Indications |
Decotrim Suspension is indicated in:
Respiratory tract infections : Acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, lobar and broncho-pneumonia, otitis media and sinusitis .
Genito-urinary tract infections : Urethritis, cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, and gonorrhoea in penicillin allergic patients.
Gastrointestinal infections : Typhoid and paratyphoid fever, chronic carriage if Salmonella typhi and paratyphi, cholera and shigellosis.
Skin infections : Pyoderma, abscesses and wound infections .
Other bacterial infections : Acute and chronic osteomyelitis, acute brucellosis, septicaemia and other infections caused by sensitive pathogens

| Dosage & administration |
Decotrim Suspension Children :
6 weeks to 6 months : 2.5 ml (½ teaspoonful) twice daily.
6 months to 6 years : 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) twice daily .
6 -12 years : 10 ml (2 teaspoonful ) twice daily.
In acute infections, Decotrim Suspension should be given for at least 5 days or until the patient has been symptom free for 2 days.

| Contraindications |
Decotrim Suspension should not be given to patient with a history of hypersensitivity to sulphonamide, trimethoprim or co-trimoxazole. It is contraindicated in patients showing marked liver parenchymal damage and in severe renal insufficiency. It should not be given in pregnancy, in patients with serious haematological disorders and in infants under 6 weeks.

| WARNINGS |
|
In prolonged treatment, complete blood count is to be performed at monthly intervals in renal impairment, a modified dosage schedule is indicated and adequate fluid intake is required. It is to be taken with caution during breast feeding. Treatment should be discontinued if skin rash appears.

| Side effects |
|
Nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, glossitis can occur, Decotrim-DSmay cause thrombocytopenia, purpura, leucopenia & very rarely agranulocytosis.
|
| PHARMACEUTICAL PRECAUTION |
|
Store in a cool dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.

Decotrim-Suspension : Bottle containing 60 ml suspension. Each 5 ml contains co-trimoxazole 240 mg.
