 DESCRIPTION

Ampicillin (D-Ampicillin) is a broad spectrum, acid-stable bactericidal antibiotic which covers a wide range of infections caused by both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

 COMPOSITION

D-Ampicillin 250 mg Capsule : Each Capsule contains Ampicillin BP 250 mg.

 MODE OF ACTION

Ampicillin inhibits the transpeptidase enzyme which is responsible for final cell wall synthesis. As a result the bacterial cell wall is weakened and swelled up and is ruptured.

 INDICATION

Respiratory tract infections: Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, otitis media, bronchiectasis.
Gastrointestinal tract infections: Typhoid, paratyphoid, bacillary dysentery, gastroenteritis.
Genitourinary tract infections: Cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, gonococcal urethritis, puerperial sepsis.
Other infections: Post-operative infections, dental infections, septicaemia, endocarditis, meningitis, osteomyelitis.

 DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION

Oral:
Adults: 250-500 mg 6 hourly.
Children: Upto 2 years, 1/4 of the adult dose. 2-10 years, 1/2 of the adult dose; or based on body weight, 25-50 mg/kg/day in divided doses.
For the treatment of bacterial meningitis:

 SIDE EFFECT

During therapy with ampicillin, occasional rashes, transient diarrhoea or indigestion may rarely be reported.

 CONTRAINDICATIONS

Ampicillin is contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitivity.

 USE IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION

Ampicillin is relatively safe for use in pregnancy. Some amount of drug is found in the breast milk, but this rarely causes any problem, although there is a theoretical risk of sensitizing the baby to penicillin.

 PRECAUTIONS

Before administering any member of penicillin, the history of hypersensitivity should be borne in mind. Skin sensitivity test should be done before administration of the drug in parenteral route.

 DRUG INTERACTION

Ampicillin interacts with warfarin, oral contraceptives. Plasma concentration of ampicillin is increased by concurrent administration of probenecid. Food may reduce the absorption of ampicillin taken around the time of ampicillin ingestion.

 OVERDOSAGE

A little information on acute overdose is available. Toxicity is low and the only adverse effects are nausea, vomiting, and allergic manifestutiry.

 STORAGE

Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light.
